Many children find sitting still in waiting rooms difficult. Here are seven simple strategies for helping your kids stay calm at the dentist’s office.

-Help your children sleep well the night before the appointment. Cranky children are rarely calm, so ensure your children get a full night’s sleep — and maybe a nap — before their dental visits. A dental appointment will be much calmer when your kids are relaxed.

-Bring along their favorite comfort items or toys. Before heading out of the house, snag your children’s favorite toys, blankets, stuffed animals, or other comfort items for your trip. A beloved item or toy nearby can help a child recognize that trips to the dentist’s office can be comfortable and pleasant.

-Treat them to a light, healthy snack before the appointment. If adults have difficulty staying pleasant when they’re hungry, then how much harder should it be for kids? A small, healthy snack like grapes or apples can make visiting the dentist a lot easier.

-Describe to them why dental appointments are important for keeping their teeth healthy. Explain why and how dentists clean teeth. Appreciating the necessity of dental appointments and understanding dental procedures can help children relieve the worries behind their boisterous behavior.

-Hand them activities to work on or toys to play with while they wait. A toy, a video game, or even homework can completely distract your children in the waiting area. Before they realize it, they will be starting their appointments with Dr. Amirani and our staff.

-Remain calm and orderly during your visit. When you do your best to stay calm, your children will follow your example. It’s also imperative to stay near your children while you’re in the dentist’s office, so try walking around together a bit if they’re feeling fidgety.

-After your visit, recognize your children for their good behavior. Praise can be a great motivator for children, so if they behaved well during their visit, then let them know right away! Don’t forget to recap their appropriate behavior before additional appointments.
