When you think of oral hygiene, you probably think about brushing your teeth. And while maintaining your teeth is certainly important, lots of people don’t think about their gums very often. But gum disease is a very serious threat to the oral health of both adults and children alike. Here is some information about periodontal care.

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is an infection of the gums caused by bacteria in the mouth. These bacteria live in plaque, a sticky substance that constantly accumulates in your mouth. You can remove plaque by brushing and flossing, which helps keep gums healthy. If gums are not adequately cleaned, they can become infected. Early symptoms include tenderness, swelling, and bleeding, but gum disease can eventually cause tooth loss.

To treat infected gums, one of the best options is root planing and scaling. In this process, the space between teeth and gums is cleaned all the way down to the roots. This usually stops the progression of gum disease. It may sound unpleasant, but it actually causes little lasting discomfort. Local anesthesia can also be administered to control pain if necessary.

The best way to treat gum disease, though, is by preventing it in the first place. Flossing is especially important in this effort. It is most commonly between teeth and in tight places that plaque can remain lodged, and flossing gets into those areas.
