Brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day is an effective way to maintain your oral health on a daily basis. At the same time your regular dental checkup is a critical for removing tartar, early detection of tooth decay, oral cancer screening and monitoring your mouth for any other potential problems.

The first stage of the checkup includes a basic cleaning. This involves several simple procedures, where a dental hygienist cleans and polishes your teeth. Dangerous tartar is removed from your teeth, while the polishing procedure will remove minor surface stains.

The hygienist will also inspect your mouth for possible signs of tooth decay. If there are any problem areas you are concerned about, let them know so they can give it extra attention and note it for the dentist.

The second stage of the appointment involves a routine checkup where the dentist looks for any tooth decay while also inspecting your gums for any signs of gum disease. The end of the appointment includes a basic oral cancer screening, where they will check your tongue, throat, face, head and neck looking for any signs of infection, swelling or cancer.
